Inside Look: Ayres Hotel Manhattan Beach – Itty Bitty Atlas

Ayres Hotel Manhattan Beach

From Spring Break to the heart of summer to even winter, Los Angeles is a top destination for anyone looking for some fun in the sun. With that goal in mind, there’s no better place to enjoy the weather and take lodgings in extreme luxury than Ayres Hotel in Manhattan Beach.

Ayres Hotels has locations all over California, including two in the LA area. But this location in Hawthorne is located right off of Interstate 405, and is not only a 15 minute drive from Manhattan Beach, but even closer to the LAX airport. It’s nestled in a neighborhood filled with a variety of restaurants and shops, which makes it a convenience for singles heading to the beach, to couples, and even families.

The Ayres family began its hotel business in 1905, when LA was still a small town, and this hotel reflects an old world style of grandeur. If you entered the building blindfolded and opened your eyes inside, it’s likely you would think you’ve been transported to a European palace from the Renaissance. At first, you’ll be greeted by the grand staircase, which is reminiscent of the luxurious ocean liners from 100 years ago, and the extensive art collection gives the halls a high class, museum feel.

The front desk is backed by a late 17th century tapestry, that could have covered the bed of a giant. This tapestry depicts Louis XIV as Caesar triumphantly entering Rome, the four females surrounding him depicts the 4 parts of the World-America, Europe, and Asia & Africa.

The hotel is adorned with a collection of original Russian Impressionist fine art. Originally loaned to the hotel by a local gallery, the artist’s family has since allowed the Ayres to purchase many pieces you see in the main hallway off of the lobby and in the restaurant. All of the artwork throughout the hotel is original pieces.

This beautiful decor continues into the rooms, whose luxurious suites make you want for nothing. The living space is expansive and the accommodations are an embarrassment of riches. Two writing desks, a couch, and two flat screen tvs in their own wardrobes all sit, in addition to the large, comfortable bed to make the room instantly feel like a home.

The room is also wonderfully soundproofed; you’d never know you’re sharing the hotel with hundreds of other people or within a stone’s throw from a major freeway.

Any room in Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without air conditioning. The suites have heating and A/C units in the bedroom and living room, ensuring that you have total control over what the temperature is wherever you like. The tvs have full cable options, but there’s always the complimentary wifi available as well.

The grand scale extends to the pool and hot tub, which is in the center of the outdoor garden courtyard, and looks absolutely exquisite at night. Located inside just beyond the courtyard, you’ll find a fitness center, a library filled with an old European book collection and an American/European restaurant inside. They even host customized weddings, which we caught a glimpse of as we checked in.

Parking is gated and plentiful just steps away from the lobby. We’ve never stayed at an Ayres location in the past, but are curious to see their other properties on our next adventure to sunny California.
