The Mariners caught the attention of Major League Baseball fans with their red hot 13-2 start, but that shouldn’t distract any of their followers from what’s going on at the minor league level.
The Tacoma Rainiers began their season on April 4, and kicked it off at home on April 9. Despite a shaky start, the team is chock full of promising players and in a shallow division where they will compete.
Most of the team’s woes so far are due to the pitching, which is last in the Pacific Coast League in Earned Run Average. The team’s #1 prospect (and #40 prospect in all of baseball) Justus Sheffield has had some poor outings thus far, but made a positive turn in his most recent start against the El Paso Chihuahuas.
J.P. Crawford doesn’t technically qualify as a prospect anymore, but was MLB’s #2 prospect as recently as 2016. He’s also still young, and an electric player to watch, starting the year with a .321 batting average.
Additionally, catcher Austin Nola has set the PCL on fire with a .474 batting average, 3 home runs, and 15 runs batted in, all tops on the team.
Off the field, Cheney Stadium is just as inviting as ever, with plenty of new eating options for fans to munch on between innings.

La Familia Cantina
On the third base side of the park is simplistic, Mexican goodness. Only two items are on the menu, a nacho dish and taco plate, but either are absolutely worth a buy. With your choice of chicken or pork and all the jalapenos you could want, and right next to the 7 Seas Brewery beer garden, this is a can’t miss spot if you have even a passing liking to Mexican food.
Bar-B-Q
This is where you want to go if you like barbecue. With at least four beers on tap each game and all the barbecued meat you can smother in sauce, and just behind home plate, it’s the prime location for some prime ribs.
Fowl Territory
This one-stop-shop, will always deliver on the chicken, but they also have hot dogs and killer pretzels if those tickle your fancy. They’re in their same place as well, behind the plate on the left side, across from the team store.
