After an offseason that led many to write the ballclub off for 2019, the Seattle Mariners have shot out of the gate to a 6-1 record. It’s their best start since the historic 1995 season, which by the way, ended with them winning the western division title.
New acquisitions Domingo Santana, Jay Bruce and Tim Beckham are leading the charge, combining for 9 home runs and 27 runs batted in. Tim Beckham currently leads the American League in hits and total bases, and Domingo Santana leads in RBIs, and both lead in total times on base.
The pitching is also holding up well, with breakout Marco Gonzales and new Japanese lefty Yusei Kikuchi tossing two solid starts. Sure, the season is early, and the bullpen has been shaky, but a good start is always more encouraging than a poor one.
So if you were hesitant to get on down to the ballpark for fear of seeing a poor team in cold weather, think again! The boys are mashing home runs at a historic rate, and the weather has sat in the 60’s for the last week.
And if that wasn’t exciting enough, the park has seen a few changes since last season that make a return visit worthwhile. Not only has the stadium adjusted its moniker to T-Mobile Park, but the food options in the spacious ‘Pen have also received a makeover.
We got to see the conclusive contest to the four game series against the Red Sox, which included an offensive explosion of seven runs in the third inning, and four home runs in the entire ballgame. In between all that excitement, we managed to give some of the new food items a try.
Fat’s Chicken
Chicken tenders and fries are an easy standby from other food stands at the park like Rolling Roof Refreshments and Ivar’s, but Fat’s Chicken gives its own unique southern spin on this old favorite. They also have a mouth watering Mac N Cheese, the fried chicken sandwich, and chicken wings.
For something new and unexpected, we recommend the Poutine, a gravy and cheese mixture dumped on top of fries to make for a perfect snack and delicious alternative to the park’s famous garlic fries.
Lil’ Woody’s
Any Seattleite who loves burgers has probably been to Lil’ Woody’s at some point, so it’s only appropriate that they now have a food station just inside the centerfield gate. Whether it’s good old meat, gluten free, or veggie, Woody has you covered.
In addition to these new solid food options, the Mariners are also moving into the future with a cashless transactions policy. All concessions in the ‘Pen and select food spots around the park will only deal in card or phone based money. It may prove annoying to those who prefer cash, but the aim is to keep lines moving faster and getting your attention back to the game as soon as possible.

The first homestand of the year is just about over, but gear up for the team’s return on Friday, April 12, when they take on the defending division champs of the west and central, the Astros and Indians.
