Have you ever wanted a space to eat that offered a wide beer and cider selection, great classic German grub, and games suitable for the whole family? All of those and more are at Rhein Haus, the restaurant with a Bavarian inspired menu and decor.
As their tagline states, it’s a place with “Bocce, Bier and Brats” and you’d be hard pressed to find another eatery with that combination! Sitting on the busy street of Division Avenue in Tacoma just across the street from Wright Park and next door to the Stadium District, it’s a top notch spot with equally top notch food and drinks.
The menu reveals an impressive selection, with plates available for one, two, or large groups. It’s mostly German inspired cuisine, with some plates taken from around the European continent. We always salivate at the idea of a good pretzel, and here they offer the biggest one we’ve ever seen. The two of us couldn’t even finish it in one sitting, but it is to die for. The jalapeno cheese and beer cheese dipping sauce provided makes it that much better.
Additionally there are specials for several days of the week, and our visit on Wednesday allowed us to try the Schweinbraten. A heaping piece of pork loin with red cabbage and gravy, this dish might be foreign to most Americans but delicious to all. If you need something more American, the Rhein Haus burger will cancel your hunger easily.
If you manage to save room for dessert, the Berliners are something to behold. Four small German style doughnuts with chocolate and raspberry sauce on the side, they are so good you’ll wish there were more with the order! Ask for a scoop of ice cream on the side, the sea salt caramel is delicious.
As for beverages, you can always count on Germans to have great beer. The selection is tremendous, with over 25 brands on tap ranging from lagers to IPAs to our favorite, ciders! Additionally there’s a full bar, and the menu is filled with specialty cocktails and wine too, so no hard drink lover will feel left out.
There’s plenty of fun and games to try before or after your meal, and the large indoor space allows for a full indoor mini golf course, and a central area for bocce ball or cornhole. There are even group reservations for bocce available. Just don’t drink too much before playing! 😉
We tried out the mini golf course and it was harder than it looked, but fun! We grabbed a pint of beer and away we went, hole after hole. Each hole is unique in it’s own way and the obstacles make it even more of an adventure. By the end of the course we were ready for round 2 of our drinks and some grub.
With locations in Seattle, Tacoma, Leavenworth and even Denver, Rhein Haus is a fun time out for anybody; from couples to adult parties to families with children, all are welcome to this unique slice of foreign style eating.
Bavaria never tasted so good, or was so close for Seattleites and Tacomans!
