January and February are typically the months of the year where we catch up on all the Academy Award contenders, and big releases are few and far in between. However, be sure to make space on your calendar for this Friday when the anticipated follow up to ‘The LEGO Movie 2’ comes to your local screen, where a good time awaits whoever gets a ticket for it.
The creative geniuses behind the original LEGO movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, return as the writers for this installment. Directing duties have been turned over to Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum, who keep intact the unique, fast paced humor Lord and Miller established well in their previous films.
Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett also return as the leads, Emmett, Lucy, and Batman, respectively. They slip right back into these roles they made so well known, but new characters also pop up, most apparent being Tiffany Haddish as Queen Whatevra Wa-Nabi (whatever I wanna be).
That kind of tongue in cheek sensibility makes this a laugh riot, and if you’re not giggling at the joke being told, don’t worry, there are a dozen more coming your way.
The movie is a visual delight, combining live action kids playing with the gorgeously rendered CGI LEGO pieces. The color palette is wide ranging, from the brown, dusky Mad Max wasteland to the black mystical outer space areas to the pink and glitter dominated toy land belonging to the little sister.
Consistently visually inventive, and most importantly, funny, The LEGO Movie 2 is the best new film of 2019 in theaters. You shouldn’t hesitate to take family and friends of all ages to enjoy this romp of vivid color, catchy tunes, and so many hilarious cameos and small reference jokes that will make your head spin.
In theaters everywhere Friday, Feb 8! #TheLEGOMovie
